Another fugitive re-arrested

By Our Correspondent

GUJRAT, Oct 26: Another fugitive, who escaped from the Mandi Bahauddin District Jail on Wednesday, was re-arrested from his hideout in Lahore on Friday.

Eleven prisoners involved in several cases of heinous nature had escaped from the jail after taking a jail official hostage. Later, three fugitives — Ausaf, Jehangir and Ghulam Azad — were re-arrested while the remaining eight managed to escape.

After the jailbreak, 13 jail employees were suspended from service, including a deputy and two assistant superintendents.

Punjab DIG (prisons) Abdus Sattar Aajiz was deputed as in charge of the departmental inquiry while Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat and Rawalpindi jail chiefs were requested to assist the DIG.

The re-arrested fugitive, Qamar Abbas, told police during the preliminary inquiry that the jail staff was also involved in the jailbreak.

However, the mystery of infiltration of deadly weapons into the jail remained unresolved. Seven fugitives, including Arshad, Ejaz, Shabbir, Nazir, Nasir Iqbal, Arshad and Nasir Mehmood, are still at large.

Judicial probe: District and sessions judge Chaudhry Faiz Talib ordered a judicial probe into the affairs of a police encounter, Dawn learnt here on Friday.

Mazhar alias Majhu was shot dead two weeks ago in what the Tanda police claimed an encounter.

Civil judge Nawazish Ali, deputed as inquiry officer, summoned the former Tanda police SHO to appear before court on Oct 26 to record his statement.

The inquiry officer also requested eyewitnesses, if any, to contact the court. He assured that his name would be kept secret.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Gujranwala Range DIG had transferred SHO Mian Khalid to Narowal.
