Railways asks PTCL to restore network

Published October 26, 2001

LARKANA, Oct 25: The Pakistan Railways has approached the Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) for the restoration of overhead wire network for the smooth running of trains.

The Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways, Sukkur, in a recent communication to the General Manager STR-V, Sukkur, has pointed out towards the in-operation of the overhead wire network on Kotri-Dadu section since August 1998.

The train service had seriously been affected on this route due to the defective overhead wire network, officials complained.

The PTCL on August 17, 2001, in a letter to the GM STR of PTCL had tried to know the latest position regarding the logistics pertaining to the railways. Sources said that a series of meetings between the officials had remained inconclusive.

The overhead wire network alignment running alongside the Railways grew defective and faulty with the reported incidents of theft of copper wire and poles.

The PTCL in Larkana had lodged numerous FIRs of such incidents, but in vain. The frequent theft of wires and poles had badly disturbed the communication system and its intensity could be gauged from the fact that on the Kotri-Dadu section many intersections were inoperative since 1998.

Sources said that the microwave system of railways, installed with the Japanese help, had also become defective between the Larkana-Dadu and Larkana-Usta Muhammad via Shahdadkot sections.

CELL PHONE: The cellular phone service is likely to start in Larkana district within a fortnight.

The Divisional Engineer Telegraphs, Larkana, Gulzar Soomro said on Thursday that Paktel would start its installation within a couple of days for which the PTCL had provided it with necessary logistical help.

Initially, it would provide 500 connections that would later on be expanded, he said, adding that Instaphone had also approached the PTCL for commissioning its services in the district.

PS RAIDED: The raiding party of Sindh High Court, Circuit Court Larkana, on Thursday recovered a detainee Javed Ahmed Kalhoro kept in illegal confinement at Mahi Makool police station.

Waheed Ali s/o Muhammad Panah Kalhoro, a resident of Kambar, approached the court alleging that on October 19, 2001, SHO Mahi Makool Habibullah Malik along with eight cops raided his house and arrested his brother, Javed Kalhoro.

The SHO allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 for the release of Javed, which he could not arrange, he told the court.

The division bench consisting of Justice Zahid Qurban Alvi and Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani ordered Gulzar Soomro to pay a surprise visit and unearth any such detainee in the aforementioned police station.

While Javed was recovered from one of the police posts of Mahi Makool police jurisdiction, the SHO failed to prove his point as to why he (Javed) had been kept under wrongful confinement.

The detainee was released on personal bond and the in-charge police post, Nisar Ahmed, has been asked to appear before the court on Friday (today).
