SAHIWAL, Oct 25: An accused in a dacoity case was found hanged in the Farid Town police station on Thursday morning.
A police source said the team arrested Punnun, 17, of Chak 93/6-R, his accomplice Nazar and Khizar for their involvement in a dacoity case on Oct 24 and locked them up.
He claimed that Punnun’s body was found hanged with a ceiling fan the next morning. He said the deceased was involved in four cases of dacoity and murder.
Relatives however rejected the police claim and said he had been tortured to death.
A medical board on Thursday examined the body and confirmed the physical torture he underwent. Samples of the body were sent by the board to a chemical examiner for analysis.
Meanwhile, the Sahiwal SSP suspended Nabi Bakhsh, discharging duty as night officer at the police station, Muharrar Zafar and constable Muhammad Rafiq.
ARRESTED: A joint team of local Excise and Taxation and police raided a homeopathic store on the Karbala Road and arrested owner with 275 small containers of wine on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, the team raided the shop and arrested Qaisar with containers of wine.
The homeopath allegedly sold similar containers of wine in the past which claimed several lives.
Police have registered a case under Narcotics Control Act.
SEMINAR: A seminar on ‘Deficiency of vitamin A among children under five’ was held in collaboration with the Unicef here on Thursday.
In the inaugural address, executive district officer (Health) Dr Shafqat Gillani said Sahiwal had successfully eradicated polio through a comprehensive plan.
He said vitamin A drops would be given to children upto five during second round of preventive campaign against polio from Nov 6 to 8 this year.
On the objectives of the seminar, Unicef resource person Dr Hamayun Hanif said around 20 million children were suffering globally due to deficiency of vitamin A. Half a million children lost their eye sight while 2.5 million expired for want of it, he added.
He maintained 30 per cent children in Pakistan suffered on account of lack of information among people regarding the consumption of vegetables.
He said research carried out globally revealed its deficiency resulted in Pneumonia, Diarrhoea, Measles and other chest diseases besides impairment to vision.
Dr Hamayun hailed efforts of the health department for combating polio and hoped they would continue fighting against deficiency of vitamin A.
Assuring full cooperation, district Nazim Rai Hassan Nawaz said the World Health Organization (WHO) had included the district in its programme to fight Hepatitis B among children.
HEALTH MELA: Punjab Minister for Social Welfare Shaheen Atiqur Rahman will preside over the concluding ceremony of 7-day health mela in Chak 3/14-D and Kassowal RHC.
The District Nazim will provide eye patients with free spectacles on the occasion.
