RABAT, Oct 24: Triple world champion Hicham El Guerrouj is prepared to launch one more assault on Olympic gold at 1500 metres despite recently hinting that he was about to move up to 5000 metres.
“After a lot of thought, I have decided not to give up the 1500 metres and will now work towards winning the 1500 metres gold at the Athens Olympics in 2004,” said the 27-year-old Moroccan who holds the world record in the 1500 metres but has never won an Olympic gold.
El Guerrouj, who also holds the world record in the mile and 2000m, had said earlier this year that he wanted to step up to the 5000m after becoming frustrated at failing to capture the elusive gold at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and in Sydney in 2000.
The Moroccan star also said that as well as intending to defend his 1500m title at the next world championships in Paris in 2003, he will also race his first 5000m next season probably in Zurich.—AFP
