NEW YORK, Oct 23: The New York Yankees, the three-time defending champions, reached their fourth straight World Series by dismantling the Seattle Mariners 12-3 Monday, Bernie Williams’s third home run in as many days the big blow.
The Yankees, who won the American League Championship Series four games to one, will face the National League winners the Arizona Diamondbacks in the best-of-seven World Series starting in Phoenix Saturday.
The rollicking Yankee Stadium fans derisively chanted “One-sixteen” and “No Game Six,” referring to the Mariners’ record-tying regular-season wins total and to manager Lou Piniella’s guarantee that the series would return to Seattle for Game Six after losing the first two at home.
Williams, one of three Yankees to homer, capped a four-run third inning with a two-run shot that answered the fans’ chants of “Bernie, Bernie”.
The inning opened with an error by Seattle third baseman David Bell as the New Yorkers, seeking a fifth championship in six years, seized upon every faltering moment by the team that equalled a 95-year-old record for regular-season victories.
Paul O’Neill hit a solo homer in the fourth and Tino Martinez put the icing on the cake with a three-run blow in the eighth.
Left-hander Andy Pettitte, who also won Game One of the ALCS, had a three-hit shutout through six innings before giving up three runs on five hits in the seventh and relinquishing the mound to Ramiro Mendoza, who put out the fire.
Mike Stanton threw two-thirds of an inning and closer supremo Mariano Rivera threw a scoreless ninth.
EAST RUTHERFORD (New Jersey): Donovan McNabb found James Thrash in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown with less than two minutes left as the Philadelphia Eagles edged the New York Giants 10-9 Monday.
The Eagles trailed the entire game before scoring the lone touchdown of a defensive struggle to take over first place in the NFC East.
The Giants dominated in terms of possession and put McNabb under pressure whenever he had the ball. But the Philadelphia quarterback’s patience and superior mobility finally paid off in the end.
McNabb scrambled to his right and found Thrash, who made a sliding catch on the edge of the end zone with 1:52 left on the clock to put the Eagles in front for the first time.
The winning score was reviewed but video replays clearly showed that Thrash had one foot and one knee down before he slid out of bounds.
NEW YORK: Vincent Damphousse scored a powerplay goal and a short-handed tally to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 5-1 thumping of the Rangers Monday, a night New York fans welcomed Adam Graves back to Madison Square Garden.
