Unheralded Irfanullah extends Saeed

LAHORE, Oct 23: Saeed-ul-Haq went to full distance to beat Irfanullah 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) in the only three-setter as many as 21 matches were decided in the men’s singles of the National grass court tennis championship at the Punjab Tennis Association courts in Bagh-i-Jinnah Tuesday.

Top seed Aqeel Khan sailed into the next round beating Shahzad easily 6-3, 6-1.

Second seed Asim Shafiq faced stern resistance from former national champion Mohammad Khalid before winning 6-4, 6-4. Khalid recently returned Pakistan from Kuwait after finishing his coaching assignment there.

Other seasoned players and national champions Hameed-ul-Haq and Rashid Malik also won their respective matches. Hameed proved too good against an upcoming Ashiq Rasool 6-0, 6-0.

Rashid Malik eliminated Arif Feroze 6-2, 6-2.

Shahzad Khan, the winner of two back-to-back ITF junior ranking tournament held at Lahore this month, outplayed Arif Feroze 6-4, 6-2.

The boys under-18 singles and under-14 competitions also started on Tuesday.

The ladies singles and veteran’s doubles matches will also begin from Wednesday.
