Chronology of PCB’s inconsistencies and ill-planning


KARACHI, Oct 19: Chronology of decisions taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as it approaches two years in office.

Dec 14, 1999 - Lt Gen Tauqir Zia replaces Dr Zafar Altaf as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ad hoc committee.

Dec 16 - Intikhab Alam replaces Richard Pybus as team coach for triangular series in Australia.

Dec 17 - Brig (retd) Khawaja Mohammad Nasir replaces Yawar Saeed as Australia-bound team manager.

Dec 24 - The selection committee of Salahuddin Ahmad (chairman), Iqbal Qasim and Masood Iqbal is disbanded. An advisory council with Javed Miandad, Ramiz Raja, Yawar Saeed, Nasimul Ghani and Wasim Azhar is constituted.

Dec 26 - Suspension of selection committee denied.

Dec 30 - Selection committee dissolved again. Advisory council to select squads.

Jan 1, 2000 - Shafqat Rana relieved as PCB secretary

Jan 29 - Yawar Saeed appointed PCB director.

Feb 10 - Saeed Anwar appointed captain after Wasim Akram relinquishes captaincy. Events later confirm Wasim had been stripped as per recommendation of Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum.

Feb 24 - Englishman Geoffrey Boycott claims he is contacted by PCB which is denied.

Feb 27 - Wasim Bari is appointed chief selector with Iqbal Qasim and Ihtishamuddin as members.

March 3 - British physiotherapist Dayle Naylor appointed.

March 5 - Miandad appointed coach, Saeed Anwar gets extension till the tour to West Indies.

March 7 - Intikhab Alam almost quit the team during the second Test at Peshawar against Sri Lanka after Miandad is named coach.

March 10 - Intikhab steps down. Miandad takes over.

March 10 - Saeed Anwar steps down because of injury to allow Moin Khan become third captain in less than a couple of months.

March 13 - Moin appointed captain for tours to Sharjah, West Indies and Sri Lanka after Saeed Anwar quits.

April 21 - Col Naushad Ali retained as Pakistan’s nominee in ICC panel of match referees but Intikhab, who was to officiate series in English summer, replaced by Talat Ali.

April 27 - PCB dissolves scrutiny, election committees headed by Brig (retd) Salahauddin.

May 3 - Iqbal Qasim removed as selector over an interview in which he reportedly spoke against the policies of the board.

May 16 - Marketing man Zahid Bashir inducted in advisory council.

May 19 - Iqbal Qasim reinstated.

July 8 - Waqar banned for ball tampering which leaves PCB fuming.

July 13 - Miandad and Moin get extension until March 2001.

July 13 - Tauqir says PCB to pull up Waqar for bringing country’s name into disrepute.

July 27 - Tauqir confirms appointing watchdog to monitor players’ activities.

Aug 12 - Waqar named captain for Singapore triangular after Moin withdraws because of knee injury. Azhar appointed vice- captain.

Aug 16 - Miandad’s contract extended until 2003 World Cup.

Aug 22 - PCB shelves plans to spy on players.

Aug 23 - PCB chairman says indiscipline not to be tolerated.

Oct 18 - Tauqir defuses seven-player revolt against Miandad.

Nov 15 - Yawar Saeed is recommended for ICC chief executive’s post.

Nov 21 - Brig Munawar Rana replaces Yawar as PCB director.

Dec 10 - Moin’s term extended until England’s tour.

Dec 22 - Tauqir reposes confidence in Moin’s leadership qualities after Pakistan lose to England 1-0.

Jan 1 - Pakistan hire Geoffrey Boycott at pounds 30,000 for 15-day stint.

Jan 5 - Fakir Aizazuddin replaces Brig Nasir as team manager.

Jan 7 - Wasim Bari retained but Iqbal Qasim and Ihtishamuddin replaced.

Jan 27 - Reports of rifts over distribution of prize money between players and Miandad erupt again.

Jan 30 - PCB says captaincy on series-by-series basis after Moin gets axe from two practice games.

Feb 2 - Moin retained captain for New Zealand tour. Tauqir says his performance would be reviewed.

Feb 15 - Pakistan engage England-born Andy Atkinson as foreign curator.

March 11 - Nasimul Ghani resigns from advisory council. Waqar Hasan inducted.

March 11 - Sikandar Bakth reportedly resigns over the selection of an unfit Shoaib Akhtar from New Zealand tour.

March 15 - Abdul Qadir resigns from PCB bowling committee.

March 20 - Yawar Saeed fails to get ICC chief executive’s post which is claimed by Australian Malcolm Speed.

March 25 - PCB says it has broken all ties with India after the traditional rivals pull out from April’s Sharjah Cup.

March 26 - Tauqir hints Inzamam-ul-Haq as next captain.

March 29 - A leaked manager’s report reveal serious differences between players and Miandad.

April 3 - Miandad removed as coach for the second time. Yawar Saeed replaces Fakir Aizazuddin as manager.

April 3 - Waqar Younis replaces an injured Moin as captain for Sharjah tour.

April 8 - Tauqir says Miandad given break, not sacked.

April 8 - Aizazuddin suspects PCB insider in fake report saga.

April 10 - Tauqir says Waqar to stay as captain.

April 11 - Moin’s captaincy depends on fitness: Tauqir

April 15 - Waqar named captain for England tour.

April 22 - Moin gets clean bill of health from PCB doctors.

April 24 - Moin dropped from 20-man provisional squad for England tour on fitness grounds.

April 26 - Australian Daryl Foster named bowling coach.

April 28 - Rashid Latif recalled, Wasim Akram named as 17th man for England tour.

May 1 - Richard Pybus re-engaged after PCB said he was asking too much.

May 21 - Tauqir accepts responsibility team’s poor performance but refuses to step down.

June 1 - Australian coach Richard Done hired.

July 1 - Advisory council dissolved.

July 6 - Englishman Julian Fountain hired as fielding coach for A team.

July 7 - Miandad refuses to head a PCB committee

July 10 - Pybus refuses to continue as coach after the tour to England.

July 18 - Bari reappointed chief selector with Aqib Javed and Shafiq Ahmad named paid selectors.

Aug 3 - Waqar retained captain until New Zealand series

Aug 11 - Tauqir accuses media of triggering controversies

Aug 16 - Pybus appointed coach. Wasim recalled to Test squad.

Sept 14 - Pybus returns to South Africa. PCB terminates his contract.

Oct 11 - Mudassar Nazar appointed coach until the tour to Bangladesh.

Oct 17 - PCB marketing consultant Zahid Bashir resigns.
