Dramatic victory for Enqvist

STUTTGART (Germany), Oct 18: Thomas Enqvist wasted a match point and survived another for a dramatic 6-3 6-7 7-6 victory over American teenager Andy Roddick in a third round match at the Stuttgart Masters Series tournament on Thursday.

Swede Enqvist, who won the indoor tournament two years ago, will play either Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov or Czech Jiri Novak for a place in the semifinals of the $2.95 million event.

Britain’s Tim Henman, the seventh seed, also reached the last eight, cruising after a tight first set to beat Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti 7-6 6-2.

Henman, who is still in contention for a spot in the season-ending Masters Cup for the top eight players next month in Sydney, now faces either German Tommy Haas or Moroccan Hicham Arazi.

Thursday’s results (prefix number denotes seeding):

Third round: 15-Tommy Haas (Germany) beat Hicham Arazi (Morocco) 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-1); 5-Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Russia) beat Jiri Novak (Czech Republic) 6-3 6-4; Thomas Enqvist (Sweden) beat 14-Andy Roddick (U.S) 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5); 7-Tim Henman (Britain) beat Nicolas Lapentti (Ecuador) 7-6 (7-4) 6-2

ZURICH: Fourth seed Jelena Dokic was able to shake just enough rust off her game for a 6-4 6-4 error-littered win over American Chanda Rubin on Thursday to reach the Swisscom Challenge quarterfinals.

One of the hottest players on the women’s circuit with titles in two of her last three events, Dokic had clearly cooled off since sweeping past Elena Dementieva in the final of the Kremlin Cup two weeks earlier, committing 11 double faults and 34 unforced errors.

A first-round bye and a quirky schedule also combined to leave the Yugoslav waiting on the sidelines for four days to play her opening match

With defending champion and top seed Martina Hingis ruled out after ankle surgery, and newly-crowned world number one Jennifer Capriati and world number three Lindsay Davenport in the bottom half of the draw, the path to a third final in four events appears clear of any menacing hurdles for the Yugoslav.

The match began with six of the first seven games going to deuce and Rubin up a break leading 4-3.

But suddenly the 18-year-old Yugoslav sweeping the next six games to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the second.

Thursday’s results:

Second round: 4-Jelena Dokic (Yugoslavia) beat Chanda Rubin (U.S.) 6-4 6-4; 9-Sandrine Testude (France) beat Iva Majoli (Croatia) 7-6 (8-6) 6-4—Reuters
