No respite from Indian shelling

By Our Correspondent

SIALKOT, Oct 18: Seven cattle were killed in firing by Indian security forces in villages near the Sialkot working boundary on Thursday.

Official sources told Dawn that the Indians continued shelling Bajwat, Chaprar, Sucheetgarh, Bajragarhi, Harpal, Chunb (Gujrat), Jammu, Charwa, Zafarwal and Shakargarh sectors. Seven more houses were destroyed besides damage to standing paddy crop.

The sources claimed that the Chenab Rangers thwarted another major Indian attempt of fencing the Jammu sector late Wednesday night.

BLAST VICTIMS: The government is yet to announce financial compensation for the victims of Sialkot bomb blast even after a lapse of a month.

As per details, six labourers expired while 44 others sustained injuries in the blast at Adda Mazdooran, Naikapura on the Sialkot-Pasrur Road on Sept 19.

A number of heirs are looking for the compensation as they have lost their bread-winners. However, local philanthropists, especially the business community, are silent over the issue.

Meanwhile, the bereaved families have urged president Gen Pervez Musharraf and the Punjab governor to announce handsome assistance so as to enable them continue respectable living.

APPROVAL: Punjab Labour secretary Zahoorul Haq on Thursday visited the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and discussed matters of mutual interest with the business community.

Appreciative of export culture in Sialkot, the secretary told businessmen that the government had approved the project of establishing a 50-bed hospital near the Silakot Labour Colony on the Sialkot-Pasrur Road.

The construction of the hospital would be started soon under the supervision of the labour department, he added.

SMEs: Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) president Daud Ahmad Chattha has urged the State Bank governor to establish a specialized bank in the district for the promotion of Sialkot-based small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) and to overcome difficulties in the process of loan-sanctioning.

This was expressed in a seminar on “Role of Banks in promoting and developing entrepreneurship” organized by the central bank at the SCCI on Wednesday.

The SCCI chief said in the world of globalization, banking is fast becoming a catalyst for socio-economic progress. However, relying on technology as a primary tool to fulfilling the needs of clients can best bring the corporate sector closer to healthy competition.

Internet, he continued, had acquired a preponderant role in banking and commercial sector.

The SCCI chief stressed the need to promote internet banking facility to the local SMEs.
