Ramprakash axed from one-day team

LONDON, Oct 17: Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakash was dropped from the England one-day squad Wednesday for series in India and New Zealand early next year.

Ramprakash, 32, was recalled to England’s one-day team for this month’s successful tour of Zimbabwe after scoring a fine century in the final Test against Australia in August.

But after playing only 18 One-day Internationals over a decade, he has failed to convince the selectors he can adapt to the limited-overs game at a relatively advanced age.

Pace bowler James Kirtley, who has been reported to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a suspect action, was also dropped from the side who beat Zimbabwe 5-0.

Test opening bowlers Darren Gough and Andy Caddick, left-arm spinner Ashley Giles, batsman Michael Vaughan and all-rounder Craig White have been included in the 16-man squad. England will play five-match series against both India and New Zealand.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said Kirtley’s omission was “wholly unrelated” to the decision to report him to the ICC.

“We would like to emphasise that he remains very much part of our future plans,” he said.

“We have chosen this squad with a view to building a one-day side for the next World Cup in South Africa and beyond.

“Michael Vaughan returns to the squad now that he is fully recovered from injury and his inclusion will give us cover for the established openers as well as providing competition for places in the middle order.

“We are also keen to retain Owais Shah in the squad as he performed well during the summer and had limited opportunity to impress in Zimbabwe.

Graveney welcomed Gough back into the lineup but emphasised he had made himself available for the one-day series only.
