LAHORE, Oct 17: The six-year-old grey gelding Martial Law, registered his surprise debut win by claiming the feature event of the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.
Ridden smartly by the riding boy Nadeem Ikram, Martial Law came from far behind and pipped the front-running bay gelding Burq Raftar by a short head at the finishing line.
The roan mare Oneeza, trying to match the speed of Burq Raftar could not maintain the tempo and fell back to finish third, one-and-a-three-quarter-of-a-length behind, while the chestnut colt Mon Soon completed the frame, two-and-a-quarter lengths further back.
In all, 16 ran in he concluding race of the day.
Martial Law is owned by the well-known polo player Shah Shamyl Alam and trained by Alberooni. He was backed at the attractive odds of five to one. Martial Law clocked one minute 5 1/5 seconds going over the five-furlong distance.
The three to one chance bay gelding Fight Again, easily defeated another bay gelding High Mark, by two lengths to claim the supporting event of the day. The fancied chestnut gelding Seven Spades and the chestnut filly Rim Jim completed the board.
Earlier, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards stopped entries of bay colt Mr Bond for one month for his failure to take a level start in the third race of the programme. Ridden by riding boy Qamar Zaman, Mr Bond reared back surprisingly at the time of the jump off.
This was the first occasion that the colt behaved in such a notorious way. It belies explanation whether it was the fault of only the colt Mr Bond or also the rider.
However, the rider escaped unscathed as he was not penalised. Mr Bond was a two to one favourite.
The stewards suspended the licence of jockey Shahzad Iqbal for two months for not allowing the fancied bay colt Cape Town to run on merit during the fourth race of the day. Shortly before the start of the race, some punters raised slogans alleging that Cape Town was not sent to perform on merit.
The stewards decided to change the rider and ordered jockey M. Imran to replace jockey Shahzad Iqbal. But on the “firm assurance” of the owner they withdrew their order to change the rider.
Despite that, at no stage of the race, Shahzad Iqbal looked anxious to partner his mount flat out and Cape Town finished a very poor sixth.
The race was won by the consistently-performing bay mare Morning Glory, who nosed out the front-runner Science Fiction at the finishing post.
The mare has been finishing on board. However, Morning Glory had failed to get top position in the past three consecutive outings. Morning Glory is owned by Fawad Ahmad Cheema.
Only two firm favourites obliged in a card of six events. All races were contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs.
It was a day of geldings as four claimed the honours. One of the remaining two races, was won by a mare and the other by a filly.
