ISLAMABAD, Oct 15: As many as 23 matches were decided in the 18th Federal Cup tennis championship which opened at the Islamabad Club courts Monday.

The tournament has attracted top players with Asim Shafik leading the list of seeds followed by Tahir Iftikhar, Nomi Qamar, Kamran Khalil and others. Mariam Rahim heads the women’s seedings in a list that also includes Mahvish Chishtie, Nosheen Ehtisham, Shuair Khan, Huma Ajam, Nida Rahim, Maria Rahim and Zara Omer.

The events being contested in the tournament are men’s singles, men’s doubles, junior under-18 singles, ladies singles, boys under-14 singles and veterans doubles (50 and above).

The draws for the tournament were decided by Tournament Referee Arif Qureshi Monday. The following were the results:

Men’s singles first round: Salman Bashir bt Masood Abbasi 6- 2, 6-2, Shahzad (PAF) bt Javed Iqbal Sindu 6-3, 6-3, Babar Ali bt Imran Sajid 6-2, 6-2, Gulzeb Khan Niazi bt Naveed Ahmed 6-4, 6-2, Umair Qayyum bt Jawad Chishtie 6-0, 6-0, Pervaiz Khan bt Mahir Nisar 6-0, 6-1, Dr. Ehtisham bt S.
