Man killed, father beaten up by rivals

By Our Correspondent

GUJRAT, Oct 15: A man was shot dead while his father was tortured allegedly by five people, including a proclaimed offender, in Shadiwal early on Monday morning.

Ghulam Rasool, 70, was sleeping at his outhouse when alleged proclaimed offender Amanat Ali along with four unidentified accomplices came there and started beating the old man. His son Javed Iqbal, 40, woke up to the sound of noise and came to his father’s rescue. The outlaws became furious on it and opened fire on Javed killing him on the spot.

Talking to Dawn one of Javed’s relatives said Amanat had shot dead one Tariq, a cousin of Javed, over a land dispute.

Kunjah police have registered a case.

BY-ELECTIONS: The by-elections to the post of Nazim of union council No 1, Lala Musa, will be held on Tuesday (today).

The PPP has pitched Chaudhry Qamar Zaman Kaira against the PML (QA)-backed Iqbal Butt. Mr Kaira seems to be in a better position to win the elections.

Earlier, Chaudhry Nadeem Ashgar Kaira, who had been elected Kharian tehsil Nazim, had quit the post of union council No 1 Nazim.

Meanwhile, the SSP said about 120 policemen would remain on duty at seven polling stations to avert any untoward incident.
