KARACHI, Oct 14: Abdul Raza’s three-year-old bay colt My Freedom, with jockey Shahzad in the saddle, registered another exciting victory at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting, cutting the rest of the field down to size at the Karachi Racecourse Sunday afternoon.
The Noble Lord — Vijilya sibling — starting off as the second favourite behind the roan gelding Leo, never let her large band of supporters down, collaring the favourite in the straight and went on to win by a handsome margin of nine-and-half lengths, leaving the rest of the field in her wake.
In the following race, which was the concluding event on the programme, the thoroughbred grey filly Lover’s Way, piloted by riding boy Zahoor Ahmed, came in with a flying burst when heads turned for home, beating more fancied runners Crusade and Al Ashia.
The opener saw outsider Hamza Saheb, with riding boy Nasim Ahmed at the reins, grab the five furlong sprint from Richy Rich in a photo finish, with Baby Tabassum and favourite Mark completing the frame.
Mark, leading the field into the home stretch ran out of steam and just managed stay in the frame.
In a race that later raised suspicion, Lucky One with Tariq Mahmood in the saddle, beat Shab-e-Noor (Bashir Karim) by two lengths.
When the race began, Lucky One took an early lead with Shab-e-Noor trailing in the distance. When heads turned for home, Lucky One still maintained the lead from Magyar, Pari Pakar and Shab-e-Noor.
Bashir Karim, who seemed to be asleep on the saddle, suddenly allowed his mount to get motivated a furlong from home, and although the bay filly came in with giant strides it was just to late to catch up with the winner.
Syed Taufiq Kamal’s grey colt Al Jarrar, smartly ridden by M. Yousuf, caused another upset on Sunday, winning the third event in great style. Leading the field into the home stretch, Al Jarrar was soon overtaken by the raging favourite New Challenge and another fancied runner Be Warn, going all out for a hat trick of wins.
M. Yousuf, a seasoned campaigner, did not panic and urging on his mount came back into the race and held off the fast approaching Welcome Shahtab, after passing New Challenge and Be Warn.
The chestnut filly Nudrat earned a measure of revenge in the fourth race. With a much improved performance, she beat I’m The King and Ray Of Light, two runners that beat her hands down only a week ago.
The next race meeting is scheduled for Oct 21.
