Wallace stoops to conquer Forest

LONDON, Oct 9: Premier league Bolton Wanderers advanced to the fourth round of the English League Cup with a scrappy 1-0 home win over first division Nottingham Forest on Monday.

The only goal came in the third minute when Bruno N’Gotty nodded down a deep cross and Rod Wallace bravely stooped to head the ball across the line.

Wallace, signed on a free transfer from Rangers in September, looked sharp as Bolton poured forward in the opening 15 minutes, showing touches of the form that has taken them to fifth in their first season back in the premier league.

Forest, currently 11th in the first division, eventually settled and came more into the game but the four-times winners of the competition rarely threatened to turn their possession into clear chances.

Bolton continued to look the more dangerous side and Forest keeper Darren Ward produced a good diving save to keep out a low Dean Holdsworth free kick 10 minutes from time.

Two minutes later, in Forest’s best chance of the night, striker Jack Lester somehow scooped a shot over the bar from six metres out when it seemed easier to score.

Cup holders Liverpool are at home to first division Grimsby on Wednesday while Leicester City against Leeds United is the pick of the rest of the night’s ties.

The game of the third round — Arsenal against Manchester United — has been put back until November 7 because of United’s rearranged Champions League game against Olympiakos.—Reuters
