LAHORE, Oct 9: All the winners earned facile victories before entering the pre-quarter-final stage in the ITF world junior ranking tennis championship at the Punjab Tennis Association grass courts in Bagh-i-Jinnah Tuesday.
In all, seven boys’ singles matches were held, completing the first round of the event. Nine matches were decided on Monday.
The boys’ doubles competitions also began in which eight matches were played.
On Wednesday, the girls’s singles competition will begin at 3.30 pm.
Ahmad Janisar caused an upset beating eighth seed Sohail Khan without conceding a single game.
Top seed Shahzad Khan from Faisalabad, faced no difficulty in beating Babar Ali of Islamabad in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Shahrukh Niazi was also in fine form and eliminated Sherdil Mustafa in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The fourth seed Muteeb Pasha of Karachi defeated the wild card entry Anwar Ali also in straight set 6-3, 6-1.
Ashiq Munir outclassed Danial Shahrukh Butt 6-0, 6-0, while
Zaheer Harl got the better of Iftikhar Ahmad 6-2, 6-2.
Imran Rasul registered an easy 6-2, 6-1, win over Masroor Ahmad.
In the boys’ doubles, the unseeded pair of Mohammad Nadeem and Kumail Hasan caused a major upset defeating third seeds Wasif Cheema and Akbar Pataudi 6-4, 6-1.
In the best of three sets, Omer Qayyum and Said M. Khan staged a fine comeback to beat Adnan Khan and Janisar Ahmad 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
