BALTIMORE, Oct 8: The Baltimore Ravens’ defense smothered Eddie George, and the Ravens rushed for 208 yards to ease past the winless Tennessee Titans 26-7 Sunday.
Terry Allen, who had rushed for a total of 163 yards and averaged just 2.9 yards per carry in the first three games for Baltimore, gained 108 yards on 22 carries, including a nine-yard touchdown. Jason Brookins added 68 yards and a TD on 15 carries.
Baltimore’s Elvis Grbac provided balance to the offense, throwing for 259 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown to Qadry Ismail.
The Ravens’ defense did not allow any points, but Baltimore’s bid for a shutout was spoiled when Donald Mitchell blocked and returned a punt 26 yards for a touchdown with 49 seconds left in the third quarter for Tennessee.
George was held to 26 yards on 13 carries before leaving with a sprained right ankle in the third quarter. The Ravens have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 41 consecutive games, including playoffs.
In Philadelphia, Jake Plummer threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to MarTay Jenkins on fourth down with nine seconds left in the game, to rally the Arizona Cardinals to a 21-20 victory.
In Atlanta, the Chicago Bears, led by middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, racked up seven sacks and forced seven turnovers in a 31-3 defeat of the Atlanta Falcons.
In Cleveland, the Browns rallied late in the game on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Johnson to hand the San Diego Chargers their first defeat of the season, 20-16.
In Miami, Lamar Smith ran for 144 yards and a touchdown and defensive end Jason Taylor snapped up a fumble for a score as the Miami Dolphins routed the New England Patriots, 30-10.
In New Orleans, the Saints used their defense and kicker John Carney to beat the Minnesota Vikings 28-15.
In East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Giants used a third-string back and a prime-time defense to keep the Washington Redskins winless on the year with a 23-9 victory.
In Pittsburgh, Jerome Bettis became the 14th player in NFL history to rush for 10,000 yards in a career and quarterback Kordell Stewart ran for 61 yards and a touchdown as the Steelers christened their new stadium with a 16-7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
In Seattle, Shaun Alexander recorded career highs with 176 yards and two touchdowns, and Trent Dilfer threw for 219 yards and a score as the Seattle Seahawks posted a 24-15 victory over the Jaguars.
In Tampa, Florida, Mike Alstott broke off a 39-yard touchdown run with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Buccaneers to a 14-10 victory over the previously unbeaten Green Bay Packers in a battle of NFC Central rivals.
