Anti-US rally baton-charged

Dawn Report

SUKKUR, Oct 8: Several people including the district Amir of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Ghulam Ghous Ghazi, were injured when police used tear gas and baton charged activists of several parties who wanted to take out a procession on Monday against the US attack on Afghanistan.

According to JI sources, Hizbul Mujahideen and the workers of Jamiat-i-Tulaba wanted to stage a rally in the city to lodge a protest against the “evil designs of the US” against Osama bin Ladin and the Taliban and to condemn the policies of Gen Pervez Musharraf who supported the US in the war against Afghanistan.

As the protestors arrived at the Clock Tower, Sukkur, senior police officials along with a strong contingent of police rushed to the site and asked the protestors to disperse peacefully saying that taking out a procession would not be allowed.

The leaders of the JI insisted on taking out a “peaceful protest”. An argument started with the police as a result of which the activists were baton charged. Later, tear gas shells were lobbed on the crowd in Mehran Markaz and Dharamshala.

According to JI sources, several of its activists including the district Amir, Ghulam Ghaus Ghazi, and Hafiz Karamullah Tunio were injured.

Similar protest rallies led by JUI leaders were also brought out in Shikarpur, Jacobabad, and other parts of Sindh, in which the religious leaders said that Muslims all over the world had accepted the challenge of the US which had declared to start a crusade on Sept 17.

The JI leaders said that the Muslim world would once again defeat the infidels and inflict a crushing defeat on the US.

The speakers also condemned Gen Pervez Musharraf and his policy to support the US saying that he had welcomed the enemy of the Muslim Ummah. They strongly criticized him for imposing restriction on the movement of Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Our Shikarpur correspondent adds: The activist of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) took out a rally from Madarsa Qadria college road and staged a demonstration at Lakhi Gate tower against the air strikes on Afghanistan by American and British forces.

The rally was led by Moulana Muhammad Yaqoob Mehar, Haji Nisar Ahmed Memon, Moulana Abdul Bari Shaikh, Hafiz Ubedullah Panhwar and Hafiz Abdul Hafeez Soomro, who while speaking on the occasion condemned the military attack on Afghanistan. The speakers also expressed their determination to launch Jehad against America and its allies involved in the attacks. The protesters raised slogans against president Bush and President Pervez Musharraf and set ablaze an effigy of American president George Bush.

Our Larkana correspondent adds: Around 60 activists of Jamait Uelama-i- Islam on Monday took out a procession under the leadership of Moulana Munir Ahmed in Mirokhan protesting against US air strikes against Afghanistan. They chanted slogans against US and termed the attacks on Afghanistan unjustified sans any proof against Osama. Earlier the students also took out a procession supporting the Afghan government.

PPI ADDS FROM BADIN: The religious parties under the aegis of the “Pak-Afghan Council” marked their protest by taking out a rally from the Qatar Mosque on Monday.

Scores of protesters including religious leaders and students of various seminaries participated in the rally.
