DALLAS (Texas), Oct 6: Goaltender Ed Belfour made 18 saves and improved to a perfect 7-0-0 against the Nashville Predators as the Dallas Stars won 4-1 Friday.
Brendan Morrow scored twice for the Stars who opened their new arena in front of 18,532 fans.
Cliff Ronning gave Nashville the lead 7:12 into the game before Sergei Zubov tied the game, 1-1, on a powerplay just over five minutes later.
The Stars took the lead 57 seconds into the second period when Joe Nieuwendyk took a pass from Jere Lehtinen and beat Mike Dunham to the glove side.
Morrow’s first goal came on the power play at 7:24 of the second on a Donald Audette assist before they combined again for Morrow’s second goal 8:22 into the third period.
Belfour made 14 saves over the final 40 minutes and Nashville went scoreless on seven power-play chances.
In Tampa, Mark Parrish scored twice in a 99-second span in the third period to lift the New York Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Parrish lifted the Islanders into a 2-2 tie 4:34 into the third period when he took a pass from Michael Peca and fired a wrist shot over goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin’s shoulder.
He added his second on a power-play when he fired a slap shot between Khabibulin’s pads. Former Lightning defenseman Roman Hamrlik provided the assist.
Islanders goaltender Chris Osgood, acquired in the waiver draft from the Detroit Red Wings, made 23 saves in his debut.
Jimmi Olvestad and Brad Richards scored for Tampa Bay.
In Raleigh, Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe kept the New York Rangers scoreless for two periods before Mark Messier scored on a power play with 8:37 remaining in the final period as the Hurricanes won 3-1.
Irbe, who signed a contract extension earlier on Friday, stopped all of the Ranger’s 30 shots in the first two periods but was denied his 31st career shutout when Messier scored.
