Inquiry into PTCL affairs initiated: Officials accused of corruption

DADU, Oct 5: The district support team on Friday has initiated a high-level inquiry against the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) officials.

The inquiry aims at to digging out the embezzlement of million of rupees committed mainly by the Divisional Engineers posted in the district on different occasions.

According to sources, on the directives of high officials of Pakistan army, the inquiry was also initiated against the former Divisional Engineers of Phones including Ghulam Murtaza Khitchi, (presently posted in Sanghar), Ahsan Shaikh (now DE Development Karachi), Ghulam Nabi Babar ( presently DE phones, Hyderabad), Zulfiqar Solangi (posted as DE Phones, Larkana) and six other assistant engineers of the PTCL who were posted in Dadu division in June 28, 1994.

It was also alleged that some officials of this division had stolen the confidential record of the various maintenance, repair works of various non-digital telephone exchanges including Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Sita, Johi, Sehwan Sharif and Dadu.

The sources said that the FIA State Bank Circle, Karachi, has written a letter to the present DE phones, Dadu to provide the record against all the corrupt officials of the department since 1990 but the DE has refused to provide the record saying that only after approval of General Manager STR-V, Sukkur, Syed Mureed Ali Shah, he would provide the record.

The District Support Team, Dadu, has also sought the record of maintenance, repair works of various period of various exchanges of district Dadu.

The sources said that some 1.2 million rupees have allegedly been embezzled in the head of maintenance, repair works of the non-digital exchanges and the fake vouchers of the petrol of the generators of the non-digital exchanges.

When contacted, Col Fazal-ur-Rehman in charge, district support team, told this correspondent that the district support team had initiated an inquiry against the PTCL officials of the district including the former in charges of Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Sehwan, Dadu and Johi.

He said that orders had been issued to the divisional engineer, telegraph, to provide all concerned record against the corrupt officials of the PTCL including the in charges of various non-digital telephone exchanges of the district who were nominated in case No. 7/2001 lodged by the FIA.

When this correspondent contacted the DE phones, Dadu, he confirmed that army had initiated inquiry against the pending corruption cases of the FIA against some officials of PTCL adding that the in charge of the District Support Team had written him to provide the record of the officials who were involved in the corruption cases.
