GUJRANWALA, Oct 4: The district government has decided to allocate Rs600,000 for each union council in four tehsils of the district, it is learnt here on Thursday.
According to a report, district and tehsil Nazims asked all Nazims of union councils to furnish details of development schemes without any delay.
Meanwhile, UC Nazims expressed their dissatisfaction over the allocated amount, demanding the allocation should be increased to Rs1 million for each union council. They were of the view that sewerage, drinking water, streetlight and construction of roads, streets, drains and other major issues of public interest required sufficient funds.
Some UC Nazims of remote areas said the defunct municipality had no major source of income since the abolition of octroi and zila tax. They said these local bodies institutions were hardly meeting the staff salary after collecting water supply charges and fee of minor contracts.
LOOTED: Dacoits and robbers on Thursday looted the houses of two traders and a councillor and also took away a motorcycle in four strikes in and around the city.
Two outlaws barged into the house of Iqbal, a union council member in Gulzar Colony.
They held up the inmates at gunpoint and locked them in a room. Later, they escaped after collecting Rs11,000 in cash, gold and other valuables.
Three dacoits stormed into the house of Sheikh Salamat in Hajipura Colony, Wazirabad. They held hostage women and children at pistol point, scooped Rs200,000 in cash and ornaments and fled with the booty.
Four armed bandits forced their entry into the house of Muhammad Asif in Kotwali and took the inmates hostage. They gathered jewellery, cash and other valuables worth Rs300,000 and escaped.
Meanwhile, two armed robbers deprived a passer-by, Sajid Javed, of his motorcycle (GAK-9030) while he was on his way home from Farid Town.
SHOT DEAD: A veterinary doctor was shot dead by a landlord on suspicion of killing his buffaloes after administering poisonous injection in Naukher village on Thursday.
Amir Javed was present in the veterinary hospital when Chaudhry Ilyas Gujjar came there. After exchanging harsh words, he opened fire on the doctor, killing him instantly.
Police have registered a case and are investigating.
POWER TRIPPING: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) claim to have recorded a sharp decline in the power supply tripping after revamping its supply system on lines and grid stations.
This was stated by a Gepco spokesman in a briefing here on Thursday.
