FAISALABAD, Oct 3: The Farmers Association, Faisalabad, has demanded the government to enhance the support price of sugarcane from Rs42 to Rs50 per 40 kg.

FAF president Tahir Saeed told newsmen on Wednesday that the cost of production of sugarcane had enhanced manifold due to increase in the prices of pesticides, diesel and fertilizers.

He said growers were also facing problems due to shortage of irrigation water.

They had been irrigating their crop by purchasing tube-well water at higher rates, he said.

The FAF chief said sugar mills would start crushing season by the end of this month, and the government should direct the agencies concerned to look after the interests of growers. “Millowners should not be allowed to exploit them at any cost otherwise they will stop cultivation of the crop which will trigger sugar crisis in the country,” he said.

He urged the government to bring down the prices of fertilizers, pesticides and other agricultural inputs.

ARRESTED: The Civil Lines police arrested an assistant sub-inspector on Wednesday for threatening an inspector with dire consequences.

ASI Fiaz Rasool had exchanged hot words with inspector Mumtaz Ahmad over a minor dispute when they were on duty at the district courts.

A special team raided various powerloom factories and found that one Sadiq Ahmad was running his powerloom by taking a power connection direct from the main supply line.

SHOT DEAD: A boy was shot dead allegedly by his rivals over a water dispute in Chak 628-GB on Tuesday night.

Ghulam Abbas along with two accomplices attacked Arshad Husain when he was irrigating his fields. Arshad sustained critical bullet injuries and died on the way to hospital.
