LAHORE, Oct 1: District governments have been given some limited powers of levying taxes under the present system. A formula is being devised according to which the district governments will levy taxes with equitable rate.

This was stated by Punjab Minister for Finance and Industries Tariq Hameed while speaking at the concluding session of the National Poultry Congress here on Monday.

The minister said the number of taxes had been reduced from 35 to nine. The provincial government was earning a revenue of Rs240 million annually under the heads of professional tax. This tax could be abolished only, provided the same amount of income was achieved through alternative resource, he said.

He said the province had stalled 3.7 million tons of wheat. The cultivation of new crop was imminent, he said. The government would devise such a marketing system that should help cultivators get reasonable rate of their produce.

CONFERENCE: A conference is scheduled to be held here on Oct 4 to discuss industrial workers’ role in the wake of the possible war in the region.

The event is being organised by the Pakistan Trade Unions Federation.

A preparatory meeting held here on Monday said that workers were already facing a difficult situation and their problems could multiply in the case of a war.
