GUJRANWALA, May 1: Various labour organizations held rallies and seminars in connection with the international ‘Labour Day’ throughout the Punjab here on Thursday.

In Gujranwala, a big rally led by provincial Food Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal was taken out.

Starting from Sheranwala Bagh, the rally terminated at the Labour Hall near Trust Plaza after parading on the GT Road. The participants carrying banners and placards chanted slogans in support of labour rights.

Later, a seminar was held at Bakhtiar Labour Hall in which labour speakers urged the government to formulate labour-friendly policies to redress their grievances.

Food Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, chief guest, assured the participants that the government would provide better facilities to labours as they were the backbone of the national economy.

Speaking on the occasion, MPAs Mian Mazher Javed and Ms Nayyer Murtaza Lone said that industrial workers were playing an active role for strengthening the national economy and the government should protect their rights.

Earlier, labour leader Mian Ataur Rehman and other speakers demanded that the government should watch the interest of labours and give up its anti-labour policies.

A seminar in connection with the Labour Day was also held in Kamoki in which provincial Transport Minister Chaudhry Shamshad Ali Khan and other labour leaders highlighted the significance of the day.

KASUR: Two rallies were brought out in Kasur to show solidarity with the labourers all over the world. Hundreds of workers and the people from all walks of life attended the rallies.

Led by local Muttahida Mazdoor Mahaz president Haji Abdul Rasheed, the first rally was taken out from Shahbaz Khan Road which was ended at the local railway station after passing through various roads and streets.

The rally was also attended by PPP MNA Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad, All Powerlooms Workers president Soofi Allah Ditta and PML-N’s Labour Wing leader Lala Muhammad Sadiq.

The speakers urged the government to build labour colonies for workers in Kasur besides announcing relief package for them.

The second rally was taken out from Tehsil Chowk and terminated at the railway station ground after marching through different city roads. The rally arranged by Shaheen Welfare Society was led by its president and union council Nazim Haji Javed Akhtar while district Nazim Rana Imtiaz Ahmad Khan, union council Nazims and labour councillors were also among the participants.

Speaking to participants, the District Nazim said the district government would set up two schools in Kasur and Phoolnagar where free education would be imparted to the children of labourers.

SIALKOT: Several trade bodies and labour organizations took out rallies and held seminars in both Sialkot and Narowal districts.

The main seminar was held at the Sialkot Press Club where speakers, including prominent labour leader Rashid Ahmad Sindhu, paid rich tributes to Chicago’s labourers who sacrificed their lives for the noble cause.

The speakers pledged to continue their struggle for the rights of the labourer community and for upholding the prestige of labourers.

TOBA TEK SINGH: Different rallies were held to mark the ‘May Day’ in Toba Tek Singh, Gojra, Kamalia and Pirmahal.

Various labour leaders, office bearers of NGOs and political parties spoke the participants and paid rich tributes to the martyrs of Chicago for getting fixed the eight-hour working day.
