Fiery Tabish spells trouble for SNGPL, Hasan puts HBL on top

KARACHI, Nov 22 Group 'A' leaders Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) suffered an unexpected reversal when they were forced to follow on by Karachi Whites on the second day of the RBS Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship match at the National Stadium here on Sunday.

After Karachi Whites, resuming at 314-7, were dismissed for 404, SNGPL collapsed to a measly 199 all out in 47 overs in their first innings against a fiery burst from upcoming speedster Tabish Khan who starred with figures of 6-112 in 19 hostile overs. Barring the experienced duo of ex-Pakistan opener Mohammad Hafeez (36) and skipper Azhar Shafiq (44), the other SNGPL batsmen struggled against the regional outfit.

Tabish received excellent support from off-spinner Misbah Khan. Misbah enjoyed a fine day with both bat and the ball. After scoring a career-best 65 off just 39 deliveries with five sixes and four fours, he snared 3-41 in 12 overs.

Batting a second time, SNGPL fared much better to reach 45-0 when play was called early because of fading light with 5.4 overs still to be bowled.

Habib Bank captain Hasan Raza struck a fine unbeaten 117 to put Habib Bank on top against PIA at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. Replying to PIA's modest first-innings total of 230, Habib Bank were 295-7 with Hasan going great guns after striking 11 fours and a brace of sixes in his 137-ball knock.

Earlier, slow left-armer Abdul Rehman took the final PIA wicket to fall to finish with 6-52 in 31.2 overs.

National Bank, inspired by centuries from former Pakistan batsman Qaiser Abbas (136 not out off 154 balls, 22 fours) and opener Rashid Riaz (101 off 141 balls, 12 fours) took a massive 219-run lead over Pakistan Customs after declaring at 376-7 at the National Ground in Islamabad.

Pakistan Customs finished the day 45-1 in their second innings.

Wapda were sitting pretty after making 279-4 despite losing the toss against KRL on the first day of their match at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi. The highlight being opener Riffatullah Mohmand's undefeated 132 with 16 hits to the fence.

In Group 'B' action Faisalabad made 326-4 in response to Hyderabad's 301 at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad. Ex-Pakistan batsman Naved Latif led the way with a 119-ball 105 that included 14 fours and three sixes. Zeeshan Asif is batting with 85 (nine boundaries) after putting on 156 with Naved in the fourth-wicket stand.

Umair Khan, the Islamabad opening batsman, reached his highest first-class score when he scored an undefeated 163 (229 balls, 22 boundaries) as the hosts batted themselves into a commanding position against Abbottabad at the Diamond Club Ground.

After bowling out the visitors for 100 to take a lead of 82 runs, Islamabad extended that advantage to 401 by closing at 319-5 in the second innings despite a lion-hearted bowling effort from Abbottabad's young left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan took all five wickets on Sunday.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) were strongly placed after dismissing Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) for 264 in the Group 'A' fixture at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Pakistan all-rounder and ZTBL captain ZTBL Abdul Razzaq and his new ball partner Azhar Attari shared the bowling honours with four wickets apiece after SSGC resumed at 230-6.

Then it was the turn of the ZTBL batsmen to dominate as they went to stumps at 180-2 after openers Zulqarnain Haider (75) and Zohaib Khan (63) added 147 before both went at the same total.

Lahore Ravi made slow progress to reach 94-2 in 53.1 overs after restricting Rawalpindi to 271 in the Group 'B' game at the LCCA Ground. Medium-pacer Aamir Hayat was the star performer for the home side after returning career-best analysis pf 6-29 in 19.5 overs.
