KARACHI, April 26: Unseeded Ahsan Qamar, caused quite a sensation in the semi-finals of the men’s singles Ranking badminton tournament by sending the three time national champion Wajid Ali packing, after three hard fought out games on Saturday.

Joining Ahsan in the final was third seed Umer Zeeshan, who whipped the second seed Waqas Ahmed 15-11, 15-7, in a match that lasted over one hour.

In the first semifinal Ahsan with some fluent forehand drives and powerful smashes raced into the lead 7-1.

The top seed disappointed with the proceedings, fought his way back into contention with clever drop shots to take over the lead 7-8.

But Ahsan with service now in hand notched up another two points to surge into the lead once again 9-8. The two fought out a neck and neck battle levelling at 10-10, 11-11, 12-12, before Ahsan pulled away 14-12 and serving for the game hit the shuttle into the net.

Yet the top seed with a great chance to wind up the game, could not take advantage of his service and then Ahsan, with a blistering cross court smash, pinched the first game 15-13.

Stung into action Wajid took a 2-0 lead in the second game, but his joy was short lived when his wily opponent forced the top seed into numerous errors to take over the lead 4-2.

Aware that he was losing ground, Wajid with his airborne service helped him into the front once again 7-5, only to see Ahsan taking over the lead again 8-7. But a costly error at this vital stage saw the scores level 8-8.

With sweat pouring down profusely from both players the scores read 10-10. At this stage Wajid with a flurry of smashes grabbed the second game 15-10, to level the scores 1-1.

Now in a better frame of mind the top seed ran into a 4-1 lead in the deciding game. Ahsan managed to draw closer 4-6, bit Wajid sent in two more cross court smashes to lead 8-4 at the change of ends.

With his airborne service continuing to serve him for good measure, Wajid was just two points away from victory leading 13-4 before losing his service.

With defeat staring him the face, Ahsan refused to surrender in a hurry and throwing caution to the wind, not only levelled the scores 13-13 with some superb strokes but also went ahead 14-13, before he lost his service.

Wajid had his last chance serving 13-14, but his fierce smash ended out of the court. Ahsan served for the match and Wajid smashed the return into the net.

Ahsan came through a worthy 15-11, 7-15 and 15-13 winner and will meet Umer Zeeshan in the final scheduled for Sunday evening at 5.00 p.m.

In the Ladies Singles the Wapda pair of identical twins Asma and Uzma Butt, fought their way into the semi-finals. So identical are these sisters that one can only tell the difference between the two with Asma playing right-handed while Uzma is left-handed.

While Asma bulldozed her way into the final with a 11-0, 11-2, victory over Farzana Saleem (Wapda), Uzma ranked No.3 was not so lucky, bowing out 11-0, 11-2 to the second seed Aisha Akram (NBP).

Aisha will be going all out to dethrone Asma in the Ladies final also scheduled for the final.

The top seeds Asma and Uzma Butt met another setback in the Ladies final, going down to Aisha Akram and Saima Manzoor (Wapda) 15-10, 15-13.

The Butt sisters took a comfortable 7-3 lead in the opening game. But with Aisha settling down and Saima lending a helping hand, recovered magnificently to win the close fought final.
