PESHAWAR, April 21: Three Afghan robbers and two carjackers were arrested in separate raids in the city, a senior police official said on Monday.

Speaking at a news conference held at the Police Headquarters, Senior Superintendent of Police (operation), Khalid Habib, said that the gang of robbers was active in Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

After receiving credible information about the presence of the gang in the Under Sheher area, the police raided the area and arrested Noor Agha, son of Mohammad Zaman; Younas, son of Shehrak and Shad Mohammad, all residents of Kabul.

They also recovered 55 tolas of gold jewellery and Rs85,000 cash from the accused. During interrogations the gang confessed to committing more than a dozen robberies in Punjab, particularly in Lahore.

The Punjab police, when contacted, said that the gang was wanted in more than 20 cases of robbery, Mr Habib said.

Separately, the city police arrested two carjackers including a young woman, during a raid at the general buss stand, the SSP said.

Farooq, son of Noor Ahmad, a resident of Green Town, Lahore and Ayesha, wife of Chand, a resident of Model Town, Lahore, were arrested when they were on their way to Lahore after disposing of a stolen car No NA-5512.

Both confessed to their involvement in many cases of carjacking and also disclosed names of their accomplices in Peshawar and Dara Adamkhel (tribal area).

Mr Habib said that both accused would be handed over to the Punjab police.
