PESHAWAR, April 20: More than 865 people have been killed and 1,580 others injured in city since Jan 2001, sources in the police department told Dawn on Sunday.

According to the statistic, 865 persons were killed, including 755 men and 109 women, in Peshawar district during the last two years. Cases of attempt to murder registered in the same period are 1,039, included life attempt on 840 men, 166 women and 33 children.

Giving a break-up of the injured, the sources said that 1,580 people were injured in firing incidents, which included 1,364 men, 197 women and 19 juveniles, and another 1,419 were wounded in road accidents.

Attacks on government officials were also remained high as 85 cases were registered for attacking police officials and 96 other government personnel in the last 27 months.

Six hundred cases of robberies, burglaries and thefts were also reported in the same period, in which the outlaws took away more than Rs30 million cash, gold and other valuables. Whereas, 405 cars and motorbikes were also snatched and hijacked from the city.

The cases of kidnapping for ransom also remained high, as 48 men and 14 children were kidnapped since Jan 1, 2001.
