SHEIKHUPURA, June 5 (APP) Inmates at the district jail in Sheikhupura began rioting earlier today in protest against alleged torture by jail authorities. Gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the prison but no casualties have yet been reported. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

 

According to reports, inmates were provoked by the excesses of newly appointed staff including one jail superintendent. It has been alleged that the new staff has been subjecting the prisoners to torture and inhumane treatment. According to the police, inmates opened fire on the wardens close to 1000 AM. It is not yet clear how the prisoners came into possession of the weapons.

 

A comprehensive investigation has been launched into the incident. Elite forces and top police chiefs such as District Police Officer Zaeem Iqbal and District Superintendent Police Tariq Zafar are reported to be at the scene.
