HYDERABAD, April 8: A police constable was killed while another suffered serious injuries in an encounter in Latifabad Unit No11 on Monday.
The police said that Eagle Squad officials, Mohammad Rashid and Mirza Rehman, were present at the Board Office roundabout when they spotted two persons, riding a motorcycle, which was hijacked from one Haji Anwar on Jan 12 in Iqbal Colony, Unit No12, Latifabad.
The police signalled them to stop but they accelerated the speed of their motorcycle and fled towards Airport Road in Unit No12, Latifabad. The Eagle Squad officials chased them.
ASP Mujahid Akbar Aziz said that when they were quite close to them, the policemen lost control over their motorcycle. In the meantime, the gangsters resorted to firing on the policemen, resulting in injuries to them.
Mohammad Rashid succumbed to his injuries while he was being transported to the civil hospital. Mirza Rehman has been admitted in the hospital.
The official sub-machine gun, lost during the incident, was, however, found by the police.
Regional Police Officer Ghulam Mohammad Malkani, DPO (Hyderabad) A. D. Khwaja, and Additional DPO Sharjil Kharal rushed to the hospital to inquire after the health of the injured.
Police conducted checking at all entry and exit routes.
A police statement said that the family of the policeman killed would be given Rs300,000 and his children would get full salary of policeman.
The medical expenses of the injured would be borne by the police.
The A-Section police, Latifabad, have lodged a case of murder and police encounter against three unidentified armed bandits following the killing of Constable Rashid.
MAN KILLED: A man, Naseer, was axed to death on the pretext of Karo-kari in the jurisdiction of the Hatri police station, police said.
His body was taken to the Civil Hospital for autopsy.
The Hatri police said that Mr Naseer was axed to death allegedly by Ghulam Shabbir in the Gandi Bello village.
It was learnt that the accused had surrendered before the police.
ASSAULT: The Tando Yousuf police have registered a case of criminal assault on a boy against four people on Tuesday.
Jabbar Bhatti, Khadim Jamali, Pappu Sheedi and Muneer Shah were booked for the offence on the complaint of Jamshed Channa, the brother of the boy. Muneer Shah has been arrested by the police.
