Remodelling of canals begins

TOBA TEK SINGH, April 7: The first phase of remodelling of canals has been started while the Lower Jhang Branch Canal, which irrigates major areas in Toba Tek Singh and Jhang districts, will be remodelled in the third phase after about three years.

This was stated by Faisalabad Irrigation Superintending Engineer Chaudhry Muhammad Hussain while speaking at an open Kutchery at Janawala Canal Rest House on Monday.

He said the problem of the irrigation water shortage in Toba Tek Singh district would be resolved with the completion of all three phases.

On the complaint of growers of villages situated on tail ends of canals and water courses, the SE announced setting up a three-member committee consisting of public representatives and irrigation officials to regularly examine the water supply indent in the presence of department gauge readers at tail ends.

Jhang Irrigation Executive Engineer Chaudhry Abdul Rashid was also present on the occasion.

ALLOCATION: A sum of Rs46.1 million has been allocated for the construction of 10 link roads in villages across the Toba Tek Singh district under the Sugarcess Fund Programme.

This was stated by EDO (Works) Chaudhry Abdul Latif in a meeting of the Sugarcess Fund Programme here on Monday.

He said the proposed roads would also include the construction of roads from Chak 55-GB to Chak 265-GB (Rs2.5 million), from Chak 706-GB to Wahi Sugarcane Purchase Centre (Rs2.8 million), expansion of Pirmahal-Kamalia Road (Rs5 million), from Maqboolpur to Saeedabad Road (Rs3.1 million), from Gojra-Painsara Road to Dharm Kot (Rs3 million) and from Kot Khitran to Kamalia Sugar Mills (Rs2.3 million).

DCO Salim Akhtar Kiani directed the District Officer (Roads) to prepare feasibility reports for another nine proposed roads.

ZAKAT FUNDS: Needy students will be given stipend of Rs2,200 per month from Zakat funds in the Government Vocational Training Institute.

This was decided here on Monday in a Governing Body meeting of the institute.

The meeting was informed that the provincial Zakat Council had allocated Rs15 million for the deserving students. It was also decided to set at least intermediate qualification for admission in computer, business accounting and marketing classes in the institute.

PACKAGE URGED: Students, who passed entry tests but could not get admission in MBBS and BDS colleges due to limited seats, have urged the Punjab chief minister to fulfil his promise of a special package for them.

Through a memorandum sent to the CM, they said that there were some 400 students who succeeded in entry tests but were unable to get admission.
