LAHORE, April, 1: Kharif season began on Tuesday with over a million acre feet surplus water in country’s reservoirs.
According to irrigation officials, Pakistan will not only be in a position to meet its Kharif requirements but will also be wasting over 20 million acres feet to the Arabian sea.
The Indus River System Authority’s technical committee meeting on March 27 had calculated around five per cent water shortage for the early Kharif season and seven per cent for the rest of the season. However, subsequent calculations based on the improved river flows proved that the country would have no shortage of water for the entire season and may also provide additional 20maf for downstream Kotri flows.— Staff Reporter
