HYDERABAD, March 25: Members of the Hyderabad district Council on Tuesday criticised what they termed bureaucratic efforts to sabotage the district government system.

Accusing the bureaucracy of working against the district government, the district council members vowed to continue efforts to make the local government system work.

While participating in a debate over a resolution, tabled by Mohammad Ehsan, seeking implementation of resolutions adopted by the district council since its creation 20 months ago, the members said that implementation on the resolutions was impeded by the bureaucracy.

The resolution, which was adopted unanimously, called upon the governor and the chief minister of Sindh as well as the Sindh Local Government Commission to restore the people’s confidence in the present system and ensure strict implementation of resolutions.

Earlier, the district council adopted five identical resolutions condemning the US war against Iraq and demanded that it should be immediately stopped.

Members of the district council expressed their annoyance over having appointed several committees, saying that the bodies were never consulted in respect of financial allocations for development schemes.

They said that during the past two years, not a single government business had been referred to the house for discussion.

Members of the district council argued that the bureaucrats were targeting the present system as it had abolished bureaucratic fiefdoms.

They urged the district Nazim and Naib Nazim to challenge the bureaucracy, saying that the entire district council would back them in their efforts.

The district council Hyderabad also adopted another resolution tabled by Ms. Shahjehan Syed, calling the people to boycott products made of proscribed products, including pig fat.
