MIRPURKHAS, Sept 23 Hundreds of people, most of them belonging to Malik community, staged demonstrations outside the press club and Town police station here on Tuesday to protest against police failure to arrest the killers of an activist of a banned organization.
Khursheed Malik, 35, resident of Khar Para, was killed on Monday night on Umerkot road.
The protesters, led by the chief of the Malik community, Malik Nizamuddin, and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (S) leader Hafiz Akbar Rashid, and carrying banners and placards, blocked Hyderabad-Mirpurkhas road.
They were raising slogans against the police and demanded immediate arrest of the accused nominated in the murder case.
Later, they staged a demonstration and burnt tyres outside the Town police station.
A heavy contingent of police was deployed to control the situation. Later, the protesters peacefully dispersed on the assurance of police officers about the arrest of the accused.
Khursheed Malik was standing near Kalay Khan petrol pump when power supply went off. Some unidentified assailants reached there on a motorcycle and opened fire at him.
As a result, Khursheed was hit by a bullet in the neck. He died while being taken to a hospital.
A murder case was lodged with the Town police on the complaint of deceased's brother Rasheed Malik against Shan Khaskheli and two unidentified accused.
Shan Khaskheli has surrendered before the police.
HUNGER STRIKE Members of the Mirpurkhas Action Committee of Social Organisations and Civil Society observed token hunger strike outside the press club here on Wednesday to protest against registration of false cases against some rights activists.
