PESHAWAR, March 21: A former Kabul police chief, Nasir Ahmed, was shot dead by unidentified people near Khairkhana, a suburban settlement of Kabul, on March 18.

His relatives living in Peshawar told Dawn that Mr Ahmed had migrated to Pakistan soon after Kabul was taken over by the Taliban militia in 1996. Since then he had been living in Peshawar.

According to his relatives, Mr Ahmed went to Kabul a week ago. During his stay, some unidentified armed men intercepted him near Alauddin, Khairkhana, and sprayed him with a volley of bullets.

Mr Ahmed was the younger brother of Gen Abdul Malik, who was a trusted comrade of former Afghan president Dr Najeebullah.

Gen Malik too was killed in the similar fashion on Feb 11, 1995 on Dilazak Road in Peshawar.
