PARIS, March 10: France is to immediately provide stepped-up protection for the country’s 900 mosques in addition to the 1100 synagogues that have been under police protection since last April.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy made the announcement on Monday although he did not specify why the decision was taken so suddenly, except to suggest a possible link to an imminent war against Iraq.
