Physiotherapy helps recover from the pain and dysfunction in movement due to different diseases and injuries. At present, physiotherapy has assumed an important medical treatment of patient.
In view of this importance, the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro, has launched graduate courses in this subject from this year.
This step will enable students from the interior of Sindh to get education in this subject and serve the ailing people. But when the students, mostly coming from poor families, saw the exorbitant fee structure of the course, they were greatly disappointed.
For the similar graduation course the Jinnah Hospital in Karachi is charging Rs12,000 annually, whereas Jamshoro University is charging Rs42,000 for six months, apart from the admission fee of Rs25,000. It may be mentioned that Jamshoro University is charging Rs24,100 annually for first year and Rs15,000 for subsequent years from MBBS students, whereas the MBBS course should be costlier than that of physiotherapy course. The fees being charged from the physiotherapy students are higher than those of private universities.
We appeal to the chancellor of the university to examine the fee structure for the physiotherapy course of LUMHS, Jamshoro, keeping in view the fees charged by the Jinnah Hospital, Karachi, and order reduction of the fees to enable students from rural areas to study this important subject of medical science, which will be a great service to medical science and poor students of Sindh.
