CHARSADDA, March 1: Provincial Local Government Minister Sardar Mohammad Idrees on Friday said the NWFP government did not intend to do away with the local bodies system but wanted reforms in it to make it function more effectively.

Speaking to elected representatives, he said the government had undertaken audit of four Teshil and district councils and those involved  in misappropriation would be punished.

He said the province had no right over its resources, which was the main cause of its backwardness.

He said the centre should keep only four major departments and the remaining must be handed over to the  provincial authorities.

He said making of Urdu official language and free education up to the matric level were major decisions taken by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government for the welfare of the poor.—Correspondent
