Sindh Education Minister Irfanullah Marwat, who is also the pro-chancellor of the university, presided over the convocation. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad had given consent to be the guest of honour, but he failed to ensure his presence. The minister said he could not come as he was attending some emergency meeting.
Students and teachers said that the convocation was originally scheduled to be held in November last, but was delayed only because the then governor, despite an earlier confirmation, at the eleventh hours expressed his inability to attend the convocation due to some other occupation.
The highlight of the convocation was the conferment of a degree of doctor of letters (Honoris Causa) to renowned writer Mushtaq Ahmed Khan Yousufi. “In addition to his distinguished services to the financial bodies in the public sector, Mr Yousufi has also distinguished himself as a writer, said Dr Abuzar Wajdi, Dean Faculty of Arts, in the citation before the award of the degree
He read from a written text about Yousufi: “The inimitable combination of elegant style and the continually humorous undercurrent has given his impeccable prose the special flavour for which he is known and admired. He has the eye as well as the uncanny knack and mystique of spotting, interpreting and defusing the absurdities, contradictions and aberrations with which modern life is full.”
The major degree holders of the university, Dr Moinuddin Aqeel who was conferred a D Litt degree in Urdu and Dr Bina Shaheen Siddiqui who was conferred a DSc degree in Chemistry, also received the university gold medals. In all 64 gold medals were given to students of distinction of 2001 from five faculties.
Forty-five PhD degrees including 28 in the Sciences, 35 MPhil degrees including nine in Pharmacy and three in Arts, were conferred to graduates that included a number of varsity teachers as well. One candidate, Dr Muhammad Javed, was conferred the degree of MD in Medicine.
The convocation was also attended by Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, Dr Atta-Ur-Rehman, Adviser to Sindh Governor, Mr Abdul Wahab Shaikh, some former vice-chancellors of the university, prominent educationists and literary figures.
Congratulating the passing out graduates, Mr Marwat said they must play their due role in the progress and development of the country. He advised the successful students to broaden their vision, improve their intelligence quotient and develop their spirit.
Referring to the ongoing projects and plans mentioned by the vice-chancellor in his address of welcome, the minister said that those would prove to be milestones in higher education not only in Sindh but all over the country.
He highlighted the efforts of the present government for the promotion of science and technology in the country, and maintained that for the first time in the history of Pakistan the budget share for education had been remarkably increased.
“I have been told by Dr Atta-ur-Rehman that very recently the government agreed to double the existing grants for the public sector universities, it will be effected in the next two years,” he said.
Dr Zafar Saied Saify, in his address, said that works were in progress for five new research institutions with the collaboration of the private sector. He also lauded the financial support from the ministry of science and technology to the university.
He said the KU intended to establish an institute of languages by merging its different departments. “The Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is also being upgraded to the level of a centres of excellence,” he said.
He urged the minister for education to use his offices for the provision of at least 20 buses and one ambulance from the Sindh government. He also urged the government to provide meaningful financial assistance to the university for the establishment of a multi purpose conventional centre on the campus.
Later, talking to newsmen the education minister said that the Sindh cabinet would consider lifting of the ban on teachers’s recruitment in the province in its meeting this month. He said that government was also making efforts to make functional the 1850 closed schools.
