KARACHI, Feb 28: Expressing concern over deteriorating and worsening situation of law and order and growing incidents of terrorism in the country, especially in Karachi, the Pakistan People’s Party on Friday held President Pervez Musharraf and the present government responsible for the situation.

PPP leaders Taj Haider, Rashid Hussain Rabbani, Munawar Hussain Suhrawardi, Jamil Soomro and Siraj Durrani in a statement issued by the party’s media cell urged the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Sindh High Court to take a suo motu action and initiate accountability of the federal and provincial governments for incidents of terrorism.

“Due to poor arrangements for security, common people as well as personnel of law-enforcement agencies are being killed,” they said, questioning that if the security officials were not safe then who would protect the common man.

The PPP leaders alleged that during the three-year tenure of President Pervez Musharraf such activities were on the rise but the government functionaries had said that after formation of political government, acts of terrorism would subside considerably.

“Contrary to the assurances, incidents of terrorism increased considerably and the PPP rightly had pointed out that inclusion of “terrorist outfits” in the government will have destructive effects on the country,” they maintained.

They deplored that instead of maintaining law and order, majority of police personnel were on protocol duty due to arrival of the prime minister which, provided an opportunity to the terrorists to strike and terrorise people.—PPI
