PESHAWAR, Feb 18: The teachers community would hold a countrywide convention on Feb 22 at the Peshawar Univer-sity to discuss the pros and cons of the proposed Model Univer-sities Ordinance, said a press released here on Tuesday.
It said a meeting of the Federation of Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) held here on Tuesday, gave final touches to the arrangements for the convention. It was decided that politicians, lawyers, students, opinion makers, and journalists would be invited so that they could present their views about the proposed ordinance.
The participants were informed that senior minister Sirajul Haq, education minister Fazal Ali, science and technology minister Hussain Ahmed Kanju and some members of provincial assembly had confirmed their participation.
The meeting also decided that there would be no boycott of classes on Feb 19 as announced earlier and complete boycott would be observed on Feb 22. Teachers from universities and its affiliated colleges and schools would take part in the convention to show their anger over the proposed ordinance.
It also expressed concern over the role played by the vice-chancellor of the University of Peshawar about the ordinance and his undemocratic tactics to prevent the teachers from holding demonstrations. It asked the NWFP governor Iftikhar Hussain Shah to remove the vice-chancellor from his post so that the prevalent unrest could be removed.
