LAHORE, Feb 16: There was rain in several parts of the Punjab, the NWFP and the Northern Areas with snowfall over the hills on Sunday.

The rain was caused by a westerly wave covering almost the entire country, said the local Met office, adding this was the first such system during the current less-rain-winter.

A westerly system had given adequate rain in the Punjab, the NWFP and the Northern areas last month but it partially covered the country.

The winter rainy season starts from mid-December and lasts till end March.

Lahore had negligible rain in December and January. It had drizzle during February against the month’s average rainfall of 28. 6mm.

According to the Met office, Muzaffarabad, Malam Jabba and Garhi Dupatta received 61mm, 50mm and 49mm of rain during the last 36 hours.

Parachinar received 47.6mm, Kalam 39mm, Balakot and Dir 36mm, Kakul 32mm, Sargodha 26mm, Islamabad 19mm, Murree 15mm, Kotli 14mm, Dera Ismail Khan 13.6mm, Saidu Sharif 12mm, Chitral 8.6mm, Astore and Bannu 8mm, Skardu 7mm, Jhelum 6.5mm, Panjgoore 6mm, Sialkot 3mm, Dera Ghazi Khan 1.2mm and Multan 1mm.

The Met office has predicted more rain in Lahore and several other cities in the Punjab, the NWFP and the Northern Areas with snowfall over the hills during the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Chief Meteorologist Shaukat Ali Awan was hopeful of considerable rain during the remaining part of the current month and in March.

He said the Met office had predicted 20 to 30 per cent less rain for the current winter. But the rain in March would most likely be more than its figure during the past around two months.

Mr Awan said Lahore’s average rainfall for the months of January and March was 23mm and 41mm.
