Tendulkar’s landmark

PAARL (South Africa), Feb 14: Sachin Tendulkar became the top run-scorer in World Cup history and Javagal Srinath claimed his 300th one-day victim as India recovered from a poor batting display to beat Holland by 68 runs on Wednesday.

India’s already fragile batting confidence, however, was shaken by the Dutch slow-medium attack as they were dismissed for 204 in an unconvincing start to their Group ‘A’ campaign.

Experienced leg-spinner Anil Kumble, though, quickly ended the prospect of a huge upset on a two-paced Boland Park pitch, taking four for 32 as Holland were shot out for 136 in 48.1 overs. Srinath also took four wickets.

Dutch opener Daan van Bunge offered the only real resistance with 62 before being ninth out.

Tendulkar had gained his slice of World Cup history in the morning. He scored 52, passing former Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad’s World Cup career total of 1,083 when he had reached 25.
