KARACHI, April 12: Sayid Paper Mills, billed as one of the title contenders, continued their winning streak in the Patron’s Trophy Grade-II cricket tournament with a third successive innings victory in Lahore on Friday.
Having brushed aside Service Industries and Income Tax in the earlier Group ‘D’ fixtures, Sayid Paper Mills walloped the Higher Education Commission (HEC) by an innings and 170 runs on day two of the three-day tie to make a hat-trick of victories at the Stags Cricket Ground.
After earning a massive 328-run lead on the first innings by piling up 425-6 in their allotted 83 overs, Sayid Paper Mills needed just 37.5 overs to bundle out the HEC for 158 with left-arm seamer Emmad Ali bagging four wickets for 74 runs.
Sayid Paper Mills are almost assured of making it to the semi-finals from the only five-team pool in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Television (PTV) celebrated a much-needed first win in the championship when they whipped Medicam by an innings and 112 runs in the Group ‘B’ game at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.
Medicam, who were 10-2 at stumps on Thursday after PTV made 389-6, were dismissed for 164 in the first innings with paceman Mohammad Abbas taking five for 56.
Forced to bat again, Medicam crashed for 113 in their second innings with Hamza Nadeem starring for the winning side with superb analysis of six wickets for 44 runs.
Also winning inside two days were the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) who chalked up their first success after two drawn ties in the same pool. All-rounder Babar Rehman contributed hugely as the KPT crushed Face Fresh by innings and 48 runs at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad.
Babar who took all four wickets for eight runs in Face Fresh’s total of 31-4 on the opening day, finished with seven for 44 to send Face Fresh tumbling to 152. In their second innings after the follow-on was enforced, Face Fresh managed 149 with Babar again being their tormentor-in-chief with five for 34, giving the Karachi paceman match haul of 12 for 78.
Humak Engineering emulated Sayid Paper Mills with their third straight triumph in Group ‘C’ as they edged past Candyland by three wickets at the Mirpur Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Azad Jammu Kashmir. Slow left-armer Mohammad Irfan was their match-winner with match figures of 12 for 100, including six for 37 as Candyland folded up for 190 in their second innings.
Omar Associates, meanwhile, earned a slender five-run lead after totalling 211 in reply to Dollar East’s 206 in their Group ‘C’ clash at the Marghazar Cricket Ground in Islamabad.
In their second Innings, Dollar East reached 131-5 at draw of stumps to set up an exciting last day of action on Saturday.
