NA passes resolution against Afzal Guru's hanging

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution calling upon the United Nations and the international community to help Kashmiris, get their right to self-determination.

The resolution was moved by JUI-F chief and chairman Kashmir Committee Maulana Fazlur Rehman at the end of his farewell speech in the National Assembly.

“This house demands that India should stop brutal actions against Kashmiris and atrocities inflicted on people who were protesting the execution of Kashmiri leader Afzal Guru,” said the resolution read by Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The resolution demanded that the body of Afzal Guru be handed over to his family members for proper burial and also called upon the Indian government to lift the curfew in Indian-administered Kashmir.

It further stated that India should repeal black laws imposed on the Kashmiri people, ensure freedom of the media and allow free exercise of religious practices as enshrined in UN resolutions and its charter.

The resolution emphasized that the Kashmir issue was not an internal affair of India. It said that the international community and UNSC should not remain oblivious to this issue and play their role in its resolution in light of UN resolutions.
