PESHAWAR, Jan 26: Muttahida Talaba Mahaz has expressed concern over what they termed violation of merit in the appointment of new vice-chancellor to the University of Peshawar, and has demanded of the chief minister to remove the VC at once.
A press release issued here on Sunday quoted student’s body President Mohammad Naveed Anwar as telling NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani that the appointment was in sheer violation of merit as the new VC was junior to 46 professors. The students’ leader alleged that the new university head was appointed due to his family clout.
He also informed Mr Durrani that the principal of Islamia College had also been appointed in violation of merit.
Mr Naveed termed the steps initiated by the new VC un-Islamic, which, he told the chief minister, had harmed the sanctity of the varsity that was once considered a prestigious seat of learning.
He also informed Mr Durrani about the prevalent unrest among the students of Islamia College and said that for the last seven days there was no class hold in the college as students were protesting against the principal.
The chief minister listened to the demands of the student’s body and held out an assurance that he would help resolve the issues on priority.
