Ex-MNA jailed in degree case

KASUR, April 25: The district and sessions judge on Thursday awarded two-year imprisonment along with fine to a former MNA in a fake degree case.

Police arrested the ex-MNA from the court and sent him to jail.

On March 8, 2012, B-Division police had launched an FIR against former MNA Rao Mazhar Hayat of PML-N (NA-138).

In his verdict, District and Sessions Judge Tariq Iftikhar Ahmed awarded imprisonment under Section 82 of Representation of People Act 1976 read with Section 94, sections 199, 200 and 471 of PPC (six-month jail awarded under each section, so collectively it is two years). The court also imposed Rs20,000 fine and the convict would have to undergo eight-week imprisonment in case of default.

All the sentences awarded to Rao Mazhar Hayat shall run concurrently.

Owing to litigation, the wife of Rao Mazhar, Sadia Bano, is contesting election independently from NA-138.

Rao Mazhar is the son of former MNA Rao Khizar Hayat who had been returning to National Assembly for four consecutive terms from 1985 to 1993 from the platform of Islami Jamhori Ittehad. Rao Mazhar lost the 2002 election to PML-Q’s Sardar Tufail. In 2008, Rao won the election on PML-N ticket, defeating his rival Tufail. — Correspondent
