Army’s Wasim betters triple jump record

LAHORE, Jan 24: Wasim Khan of Army, created a new record in the triple jump with a leap of 15.95 metres, as Army continued to dominate, with a commanding lead of 165 points on the penultimate day of the 37th national athletics championship at the Wapda Sports Complex, Kot Lakhpat on Friday.

Wasim broke the previous record of 15.93m set by compatriot Banaras Khan in triple jump in the National Games-1992.

Earlier, Wapda’s Razia Sultana had bettered the national record in hammer throw on the first day.

Pakistan Athletics Federation Development Commission chairman, Tariq Saddozai, has announced a cash prize of Rs 10,000 for any athlete creating a new record in the championship.

Army now have a total of 10 golds, in the men’s events as they won three more on Friday.

Wapda with 116 points were at second position with five gold, six silver and four bronze medals. Wapda also won two gold in the men’s events on Friday.

However, In the women’s events , Wapda is leading with 141 points, winning 10 golds, eight silver and three bronze medals. The host team earned five golds medals on Friday.

Railways, with 48 points are far behind in second place.

Muhammad Zaman gave Army their first gold medal of the day in decathlon with 5711 points. Ghulam Abbas, also of Army took second position with 5432 points, while Ijaz Ashraf, of Police came in third with 5381 points. After that Wasim won the second gold medal by setting a new record in triple jump. Noushar Khan contributed the third gold to the soldiers tally by winning the 5000m clocking 15 minutes 12.70 seconds.

Army could have won its fourth gold in the 4x100 metres relay but their international Sajid Shah, failed to take start due to a hamstring, giving Wapda’s quartet, Azhar Samdani, Ali Yasir, Shahbaz Ahmad and Shah to win with a timing of 41.9 seconds.

Wapda grabbed another gold through Nazim Shah who clocked 22.0 seconds to win the 200 metres race.

In the women’s category, Noshee Parveen (Wapda) jumped 5.27 metres to win the long jump event followed by Erum Khanum of Police and Marriam Babar (Punjab).

Wapda notched up second gold in the pole vault event when Ghazala Sardar crossed the bar with 2.33 metres height.

Shazia Hidayat bagged the third gold for Wapda in 10000m race clocking 49 minutes 52.5 seconds followed by Sadia Parveen also from Wapda and Zareen Naz (Sindh).

Wapda’s team of Saira Fazal, Noshee Parveen, Gulnaz Ara and Nasima Bibi clocked 50.2 seconds to win 4x100 metres relay followed by Railways and Sindh teams.

Noshee Parveen earned the fifth gold medal for Wapda in heptathlon event in which only three women participated.

Police won their only gold of the day through Erum Khanum in 200 metres race with a timing of 25.4 seconds, raising their tally to two gold.

Five finals in the men’s section and four in women’s section will be decided on Saturday, the last day of the meet.

4x100m relay: 1.Wapda (Azhar Samdani, Ali Yasir, Shah, Shahbaz Ahmad) 41.9sec, 2. Railways (Moazim Ali, Ali Hassan, Fayyaz Ahmad, Ejaz Hussain), 3. Navy (Abdul Majeed, Riaz, Sher Nawaz, Sajid).

Pole vault: 1.Ghazala Sardar (Wapda) 2.33m, 2.Yasmin Zareen (Army), 3.Balqis (Wapda).

1000m: 1.Shazia Hidayat (Wapda) 49m 52.5sec, 2.Sadia Parveen (Wapda), 3.Zareen Naz (Sindh).

200m: 1.Erum Khanum (Police) 25.4 sec, 2.Saira Fazal (Wapda), 3.Fauzia Aurangzeb (Army).
