Dr Soomro elected senator

KARACHI, March 9: Dr Abdul Qayoom Soomro has been elected senator on a seat reserved for technocrats in Sindh. The seat reserved for ulema and technocrats had fallen vacant following the resignation of Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.A notification issued by Sindh Election Commissioner Mehboob Anwar said that only one candidate, Dr Abdul Qayoom Soomro, filed nomination papers against the vacant seat, and upon the scrutiny of the nomination papers, the number of validly nominated candidate for that seat was equal to the number of seat to be filled in.

The provincial election commissioner declared Dr Soomro — a resident of Mazarjo village in Khanpur tehsil of Shikarpur district, and a candidate of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian — as returned uncontested to the Senate of Pakistan from Sindh under Section 18(1) of the Senate (Election) Act, 1975 in place of Dr Shaikh. — APP
