LAHORE: Bring Pakistanis back safely: JI

LAHORE, Nov 25: The Jamaat-i-Islami’s central working committee has demanded that the government should review its policy of extending cooperation to the “US aggression” against Afghanistan.

A resolution released to the press on Sunday said that the UN should take steps to bring an end to the war in Afghanistan and provide protection under the international law to those besieged at various places. Pakistanis holed up there should be brought back safely. It said Russia and India should not be given any role in the formation of a broad-based government in Afghanistan, and anti-Pakistan elements should not be included in the proposed setup.

The resolution said that America’s military supremacy was the biggest threat to the world peace and the US was using its destructive power against Islam and Muslims. The strategy adopted by the US for the eradication of terrorism would only promote the menace, the resolution said.

It discounted hopes that Pakistan would get anything in return for its cooperation to the US. In fact, it said, Pakistan might be pressured to sign the CTBT.

The resolution expressed concern over reports that Gen Musharraf would stay on as president even after the general elections, saying it was regrettable that the general was more curious about his future rather than the future of the country. It said that the constitution had clearly laid down a procedure for the election of the president and any deviation from it would lead to chaos.

The resolution demanded elections within 90 days under the supervision of an interim government. It opposed the establishment of a national security council or any other institution superior to the democratic institutions.

It opposed plans to amend the Constitution in a manner other than the one provided in the Constitution.

The resolution urged the government to ask the UN, the US and its allies to give the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination as enshrined in the world’s body’s resolutions.
